The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) guarantees 100 days of employment in a financial year to any rural household whose adult members are willing to do unskilled manual work. The Act came into force initially in 200 districts in 2006 in which the districts of Saiha and Lawngtlai were included.

    In 2007, Lunglei and Champhai districts were among the 130 new districts selected for NREGA. The Act was then implemented in Serchhip district in the month of April, 2008.
